Senior Housing Resources
Seniors make up nearly 18% of the population in the City and have unique housing needs. Over the past several years senior living facilities and programs have been developed to cater to this growing demographic group. Below are senior programs offered in the City.
The Handyworker Program provides minor home repair, accessibility and security improvements to low income renters and homeowners in both single and multi-family units. The program is administered by Michael Baker International at no cost to the occupant. Most maintenance issues and home repairs not requiring a permit are eligible, including: exterior/interior painting, minor plumbing, handicapped ramps, stair railings, floor and window repairs, grab bars. Contact Elizabeth Davis at (213) 407-4146 or email Elizabeth.Davis@mbakerintl.com for more information.
Senior Case Management Program
The City contracts with Jewish Family Services to provide case management and ongoing support to elderly residents (age 55+) who need assistance to remain independent in their homes. An on-site case worker (English and Farsi) is available on Mondays from 9-12 at the Community Center in Roxbury Park. Contact (310) 285-1006 for more information.
Senior Homesharing Program
Alternative Living for the Aging (ALA) provides a free shared housing program which matches older people with others (younger and older) interested in sharing their homes. Housing counselors at ALA interview potential roommates and obtain references, leaving the decision to the potential roommates whether to make a match. Contact (323) 650-7988 for more information.
